' Part art party, part art show, part happening, Transparencies explores the evolution of an exhibition. Local contemporary and performance art takes center stage as the curtain is pulled back on the process of putting on the show. Through notes and reflections from conception to artist selection and the overall planning of Transparencies, ArtDistrict exposes its methods and its madness.'

We worked closely with BMoCA's Adult Education Director, Sarah Kinn, to bring this one-night only event to life. In addition to the artwork that graced BMoCA's recently renovated upstairs space, ephemera from the planning process was displayed in and around the new elevator. Notes, email correspondence, sketches, lists and more were presented to reveal the process of putting on the show. From artist selection and graphics creation to event promotion and general coordinating, a sampling of what when on behind the scenes was presented to supplement the diverse and talented lineup of artists showcased.
Highlights included scent artist Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's interpretations of Sue Hammond West's delicate textile piece and Laura Moretz's bold, large-scale abstract painting. Tara Rynders' dance performance was absolutely stunning. Jessica Moon Bernstein's elephant and Tyler Beard's installation were both playful while alluding to something deeper. Tres Altman's video installation was rich and mysterious. Sarah Reeder's scuplture was intriguing.
Nearly 200 people attended the event and the work was varied and impressive. It was honor to work with those involved and to be at BMoCA. Roundhouse Spirits generously supplied the spirits for the bar and Natural Selections' music set the tone for the night. More details and images coming soon. Thanks also to Waylon Lewis for capturing bits of the show on his iphone and sharing them on elephanjournal.com.
